On Saturday December 10, Drs. Robert and Bobbi Stanley, family, implant and cosmetic dentists at Stanley Dentistry in Cary NC, traveled to New York City to attend the 7th annual International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) symposium at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
The conference focus was Practical techniques and Emerging Trends in Implantology. Symposium speakers included Dr. Dennis Tarnow, Dr. Edward P. Allen and Dr. John Kois among other thought leaders in dental implants. Discussion topics ranged from best practices to minimally invasive pre and postoperative techniques and esthetics.
Dr. Robert Stanley commented, “The advantage of having some of the biggest names in dentistry all in one room, is that they were able to collaborate on varying points of view and differences in style and approaches to common concerns in implantology. It was great to compare and discuss current practices to new techniques. We are looking forward to being at this event for years to come.”
One of the conference highlights was reconnecting with Dr. Pat Allen. Dr. Allen, of the Center for Advanced Dental Education in Dallas Texas, is one of Dr. Robert Stanley’s mentors in soft tissue grafting. Drs. Allen and Stanley were able to speak privately outside the conference on the impact his course has had on the availability of high quality dental care for people in North Carolina. Additionally, they discussed improvements in dental implants and gum grafting; including modifications to Dr. Allens surgical kit. Dr. Stanley previously urged Dr. Allen to make these changes and and was eager to discuss the developments. It was a personal and professional honor to be able to review the state of gingival grafting, specifically the advantages of using of Alloderm (and other materials) over the pinhole technique to restore gum tissue many times due to periodontal disease.
Dr. Kois closed the conference by speaking about his five diagnostic keys with respect to implant esthetics. While his points are not new, they are worthy of review and surprisingly many in attendance had not yet read the paper. Dr. Kois’ affable personality and interesting lecture were a great way to wrap an informative day. Drs. Stanley look forward to attending again in 2017.
