Can Gum Disease Really Kill You?
There is a growing concern about whether or not gum disease can be fatal.
Your oral health is our top priority! Regular dental exams include more than just your teeth, but your gums, tongue, lips, throat, and jaw as well. We provide regular dental cleanings and comprehensive oral exams when needed to keep you in good health. Regular cleanings help to prevent gum diseases, maintain good health, keep your teeth healthy and strong, and detect more serious problems early.
Our family dentistry in Cary provides dental cleanings and comprehensive oral exams which may include the following procedures as needed:
Patients who frequently visit the dentist are less likely to need invasive procedures done such as tooth extractions and root canals. Regular dental cleanings also help you keep your beautiful smile, a professional cleaning from a dentist helps remove stains, plaque buildup, and tartar.
Fluoride is used to prevent tooth decay, it makes the tooth more resistant to plaque bacteria and sugars. It can also help reverse early tooth decay. In young children, fluoride is introduced to aid in the development of permanent teeth. We recommend that children and adult patients receive fluoride treatments twice per year with their regular dental exams.
Fluoride has become a hot topic in the news recently after concerned parents blamed various pediatric illnesses on excessive fluoride consumption. They asked local governments to stop putting fluoride in the water supply and they encouraged other parents to go to dentists who did not use fluoride treatments. In severe cases of fluoride overdose (which are extremely rare), children can develop small white spots on their teeth. The vast majority of the time, there are no harmful side effects to fluoride use. Children who get fluoride treatments have exponentially fewer cavities as kids and have generally healthier smiles later in life. If you want your child to live a happier, healthier life, make sure they get fluoride treatments.

We typically recommend scaling (or deep cleaning) for patients who have periodontal disease. Scaling includes removing all of the disease-causing bacteria from the gumline. Although scaling can mean a much cleaner, healthier smile, it will not reverse damage caused by periodontal disease.A loose tooth, which is a byproduct of gum recession, is not something that can be fixed with scaling. However, a mixture of gum grafts and bone grafts may be able to help save it. The earlier you detect a loose tooth, the better. If you notice a slightly loose tooth, come into the Stanley Dentistry office immediately.
The number one cause of periodontal disease in our patients is poor oral maintenance. Not brushing, flossing, or going to the dentist for regular cleanings can cause gum disease. The best way to avoid periodontal disease is to take your oral health seriously.
