Understanding Teeth Extraction: What You Need to Know
Teeth extractions are sometimes necessary for maintaining your overall oral health.
Tooth extractions sound scary but they’re one of the most routine and common oral surgeries we do here at Stanley Dentistry. Thousands of patients have come into our office in need of tooth extractions due to extreme decay, mouth-related injury, or crowded teeth. Using advanced technology and various sedation methods, Dr. Rob or Dr. David can quickly and easily remove the painful tooth. In one short appointment, you’ll be back to your normal routine!
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the mouth. It’s usually a solution for decayed or damaged teeth that cannot be saved via a root canal. At Stanley Dentistry in Cary, we always put your teeth first and will try to use dental fillings, crowns, and other treatments to save your teeth. However, in some cases, there’s just too much damage to do worthwhile repair work. In these cases, the tooth will require extraction.
Contrary to popular belief, tooth extraction doesn’t have to be a painful, anxiety-inducing experience. We offer a wide range of sedation dentistry options so every patient, no matter their needs, will be accommodated. If you have a serious fear of going to the dentist, IV sedation may be the best route to take. If you are only concerned about the pain of a tooth extraction, Dr. Rob will give you some local anesthetic prior to the procedure to ensure the highest level of comfort.
After the doctor pulls the tooth, a blood clot will form in the empty socket. This is the necessary first step in the healing process. If the blood clot does not form properly and the bone in the socket becomes exposed. Dentists call this a “dry socket.” In the rare event that this happens, Dr. Rob will cover the socket with a protective dressing to allow the clot to form again.
Right after the procedure, Dr. Rob will place a gauze over the extraction site to stop the bleeding and encourage the development of a clot. Once you get home post-procedure, make sure to remove the gauze (and don’t replace it). Putting it in and taking out gauze can interrupt the development of the blood clot. For twenty-four hours, we recommend sitting propped up to limit bleeding. You can find full post-op instructions here.
We encourage all of our patients who get one or numerous teeth pulled to consider dental implants. After getting a tooth pulled, Dr. Rob recommends waiting at least six months for the socket to completely heal before starting the dental implant process. Our dental implant system, Omega Teeth, is one of the best dental implant systems in the country, delivering unparalleled results.
